Watch to learn how these Kokeshi dolls reflect Japanese tradition and artistry
History of the Kokeshi Doll
Kokeshi dolls emerged from Japan’s Tohoku region during the Edo Period (1603-1868). It’s commonly believed that these Japanese dolls were created by woodworkers to be sold to visitors of the region's renowned hot springs. This began as a means of simply making a little extra cash from the hot springs customers, but before long the Kokeshi dolls became a popular and sought after memento.
These contemporary Kokeshi dolls are relatively new, being developed around the time of the second world war. They are often themed to celebrate a special occasion, reflect a hobby or profession or emulate a fictional character. To this day, Kokeshi dolls are among the most popular Japanese gifts for young and old alike. Share this traditional Japanese gift with the young people in your life to connect them with Japanese culture.
